Care Tips for Carpets and Rugs for Yonkers, NY

Maintaining Your Carpets in Westchester County and the NYC Area

High traffic areas are of the highest concern in carpet maintenance. Ground in soil can cause excessive wear on the fibers of your carpet, because dirt is extremely abrasive. Remove dirt regularly by vacuuming your carpet often, for example, once or twice per week or more depending on the level of traffic and use.

Another area of concern in carpet maintenance is spot removal. Spills can cause permanent stains and must be attended to immediately. For newer carpets, use tap water to remove spots. In older carpets, the protective barrier may be worn away, and it may be necessary to use a spot cleaner. Be sure to use only recommended spot cleaners, because over-the-counter cleaners tend to cause problems such as soap residue spots or yellowing.

Professional Carpet Cleaning and Protective Treatment

Carpets should be professionally cleaned once per year or more for high-traffic use. In addition, if you are unable to remove a spot, call Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care. We can remove the spot before it becomes a stain.
New carpets have stain resist properties and soil resistors, such as Dupont Teflon or 3M Scotchgard. In time, this protective barrier wears off. Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care can re-apply the treatment after professional cleaning so that your carpet will be easier to maintain.

Maintaining Your Rugs

Your rug should have padding and be rotated once a year, or more often with higher traffic, to ensure even wear. Ground in soil can cause excessive wear on the fibers of your rug, because dirt is extremely abrasive. Remove dirt regularly by vacuuming your rug often, for example, once or twice per week or more depending on the level of traffic and use. If your rug has a decorative fringe, use a vacuum attachment.
As with carpeting, spots should be immediately cleaned before they become stains. Use a clean, absorbent material to soak up the excess liquid, and then spot clean with a solution of mild detergent, a little bit of white vinegar, and water. Rinse with a solution of water and white vinegar, being careful to avoid wetting the backing of the rug. Use a clean, absorbent material to soak up excess liquid, and then allow to air dry. For faster drying, use a fan or hair dryer on a cool setting.

Professional Rug Cleaning

Rugs should be professionally cleaned once per year or more for high-traffic use. Some rugs can be cleaned in your home, while others must be thoroughly cleaned and control-dried at our specially designed facility. In addition to regular professional cleaning, if you are unable to remove a spot, call Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care. We can remove the spot before it becomes a stain.
New rugs have stain resist properties and soil resistors, such as Dupont Teflon or 3M Scotchgard. In time, this protective barrier wears off. Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care can re-apply the treatment after professional cleaning so that your rug will be easier to maintain.

Care Tips for Upholstery, Draperies, and Other Textiles

For upholstered furniture, rotate cushions weekly to ensure even wear. Vacuum your furniture weekly, including cracks and crevasses. Keep pets off of furniture. For draperies and other textiles, vacuum weekly to remove dust. For all upholstery, draperies and other textiles, avoid excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, which can cause bleaching or premature deterioration. Be careful about the dyes in new clothing, especially blue jeans, which can bleed onto your fine surfaces.
Upholstery, draperies, and other textiles with fabric protection can be easily cleaned with proper cleaning procedures. Use a clean, absorbent material to blot spills. Use a solution of distilled water (only for W & WS Codes) and/or a manufacturer-recommended cleaner. (If you are not familiar with cleaning codes or do not know what cleaner to use, call Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care.) Test an inconspicuous area first. Try not to spread the spill over a larger area as you clean. Dry using a fan or hair dryer on a cool setting.

Professional Textile Cleaning

Your textiles should be professionally cleaned once per year or more for high-traffic use. In addition to regular professional cleaning, if you are unable to remove a spot, call Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care. We can remove the spot before it becomes a stain.
Many new textiles have stain resist properties and soil resistors, such as Dupont Teflon or 3M Scotchgard. In time, this protective barrier wears off. Hi-Tech Floor and Surface Care can re-apply the treatment after professional cleaning so that your textiles will be easier to maintain.

Care Tips for Leather Furniture

Your leather furniture can last a long time with proper cleaning and maintenance. Leather should be professionally cleaned and conditioned once or twice per year, depending on the level of use. For spills or spots, use a clean, absorbent material to blot excess liquid. Use a cloth dampened with distilled water only if absolutely necessary, and do not use cleaners.
